NBHS – After having to sit out last season because of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA), North Buncombe Senior Lani Woods, a transfer from Carolina Day School, will be hitting the court in a few days for the BlackHawks and next year for the UNC-A Bulldogs.
Woods signed her commitment papers to play for the local college team Wednesday morning (Nov 13th) in front of friends, family, team members and the press at North Buncombe High’s media center.
“I tore my ACL last season and it was kinda like a minor setback, but I’m really excited about this year,” explained Lani, who plays in the small forward and shooting guard positions, told the Tribune. As for signing with UNC-A, Lani said, “I’m so excited, I love UNC-A! I love the atmosphere that I feel whenever I go there, it’s just home!”
How does Lani feel about the game of basketball? “Basketball is my life and I’m just so excited!” Lani is going into college with an undeclared major. “I’m going to explore a little bit because I don’t really know.”
Lani’s father, Randy Woods, said, “This has been a dream of hers since she was six or seven years old. She worked hard at it. She’s always wanted to go to a D1 school to play ball and her dream came true.”
“We’re just ecstatic. This has been such a great dream for her…I think it should inspire so many kids,” explained Mother Jill Williams. “These North Buncombe girls have been behind her and beside” as well as the coaches after the heartbreaking NCHSAA decision.
Asked about the season for the BlackHawks, Lani said, “We’re really looking good and I think we’re going to be really successful!”
