NBHS – BlackHawk Senior Elisabeth Rice picked up a pen and signed to play golf for Montreat College as friends, family and fellow golfers watched her sign with the Divison II school last Friday morning (Feb. 28). The signing took place in North Buncombe High School’s media center.
“As you can see, there’s probably a hundred people in here. So just a little thing for you guys. This is a huge day for her [Elisabeth], so I want you guys to support her,” said Golf Coach Brandon Griffin, who also mentioned that it was the first time he’s had a player sign with a college. “Thank you guys, for coming! I want you guys to please make sure she feels important!”
“We’re excited to have her,” said Montreat Golf Coach John Sullivan, who is in his sixth season as head coach at the school. “Her character, her integrity, her work ethic, so I know Coach Griffin has spoken highly of her. So we’re excited to have her!” With that, Rice sealed the deal with her signature.
Griffin told the Tribune that Rice is only in her second season playing golf for the school. She had qualified for regional, she was all-conference, she was top 10 in the conference. Rice also scored the second-best on the team for both her junior and senior years.
Asked what got her interested in golf, Rice said, “I went out for the first time and really liked it and enjoyed it.” Asked about getting the scholarship to play, she said, “It means a lot because I always, as a kid, liked dreaming about signing at my high school and being in front of all my friends.” She thanked her coaches for their help in making the day possible.
