NBMS – North Buncombe Middle School teacher and coach Chris Brown inspires her students inside her social studies classroom and outside on the softball field. Now she is hoping to inspire them to join her as she runs the North Buncombe Middle School Chilly Challenge 8K Race on Saturday, February 23, 2019, at 10 am. For runners and walkers of all ages, this event is hosted by the North Buncombe Middle School PTO and presented by TS Orthodontics.
“Last year’s Chilly Challenge was my first ever 8K and only the 2nd race since 5th grade when I ran the mile to earn the Presidential Medal of Fitness. The course was challenging at points but with easier sections to recover! It’s a lot of work for a free banana, but the chili after is what makes it all worth it! Our community coming together to help our kids makes my heart happy,” said Brown.
Now in its seventh year, the North Buncombe Chilly Challenge 8K Race & 1-Mile Fun Run and Chili Cook-off draw hundreds from the area to run, walk or cheer. Many NBMS student groups and staff work together to make this fundraising event a success! The school’s jazz band performs during the chili lunch, the Beta Club staffs the water station, student volunteers work with the art teacher to create clay race medals and the softball team and student council encourage runners along the course. In addition, teachers, staff and parents contribute countless hours to the event by volunteering, encouraging kids to run and running or walking the race themselves.
Runners will enjoy a brisk scenic run and a post-race celebration that includes a tasty chili lunch from Luella’s BBQ, live music, chili cook-off tasting, free photo booth, and fantastic prizes. Sign up by February 15th and save! The 8K entry fees are $35 for adults and $20 for students. The 8K fees increase $5 on February 16th. The 1-Mile Fun Run entry fee is $15. Spectators may enjoy the chili lunch for $5.
