Hendersonville – The North Buncombe High Varsity Girls won the WMAC Conference Championship Friday night (February 21) in a game against the Erwin Lady Warriors. Erwin had the lead after the first quarter of play by a score of 16-11, but by halftime, the Lady BlackHawks had a two-point lead 25-23. North Buncombe outscored Erwin by six points in the third quarter, while the Lady Warriors made a run in the fourth quarter, but were held off by the Hawks to win 50-47. This is reported to be the girls team’s first conference win since 1997. The Lady BlackHawks played Mt. Tabor in Winston-Salem Tuesday night (Feb. 25) in the first round of the state playoffs. Unfortunately, Mt. Tabor edged out North Buncombe in a close game 48-43.
