Waynesville – Friday night (Oct 18) North Buncombe High Football Coach Brandon Allen and his team did two things: they bested last year’s record of 6-6 and for the first time under Coach Allen, and only the second time since 2004 they beat the Tuscola Mountaineers, 29-27.
In the game, North Buncombe scored first with a touchdown in the first quarter but no extra points while Tuscola failed to put any points on the board. By half time, Tuscola had edged the Hawks with a 14-13 lead. At the end of the third, North Buncombe still trailed 21-15. However, the fourth quarter proved to be the turning point with the Hawks outscoring the Mountaineers 14-6 and giving North Buncombe the 29-27 win and Allen’s first over his old team.
With the win, Allen also moved his team into third place in the conference standings with a 4-2 conference record behind AC Reynolds and West Henderson, both undefeated teams at 5-0. The BlackHawks now have a 7-2 overall record.
For Allen, a graduate of Pisgah High School in Canton, this is the best season he’s had with the BlackHawks who gave him his first coaching job back in 2011 where he went 1-9 and left for the Tuscola Mountaineers until he returned to North Buncombe where he led the BlackHawks to a 6-6 record last year.
Asked about this year’s group of Hawks, Allen said that they had been “preparing and playing extremely hard. With all the injuries this team has endured, they continue to battle each week!”
The team and Coach Allen have their work cut out for them on Friday night in a home game against A.C. Reynolds, which, according to Maxpreps.com, the Hawks have not won against since at least 2004.
